The black-and-white clip begins with a montage of archival Depression-era film footage, then follows Hopkins as he drives an old car around Los Angeles.

“I Forgive It All” is an introspective, acoustic-based tune written and sung by Petty that appears to be about an older person coming to terms with issues from his past.

Reflecting the theme, the video shows Hopkins playing a character who apparently is reminiscing about his childhood as he travels through the streets of L.A. He eventually parks in the downtown skid-row area of the city, and walks past a group of homeless people and into an old building. He enters and then heads upstairs to an apartment where he appears to have lived when he was young. As the clip comes to an end, Hopkins passionately yells, “I forgive” and pounds on a table.

Penn tells Rolling Stone that Petty asked him to direct a video to a song from Mudcrutch’s recently released sophomore album, 2, and he chose “I Forgive It All” because it “made such an impression on me.”

He says Petty was “super encouraging” after he told him about his concept for the video. Sean adds, “I just found [‘I Forgive It All’] so moving. It’s just great songwriting.”

As for his experience directing Hopkins, Penn says, “He is just an artist for art’s sake and he just liked the idea of doing it and jumping in.”
