MVD Entertainment GroupAn archival video featuring a 1978 performance by ex-Byrds singer Gene Clark, during which he was joined by his old band mate Roger McGuinn, was released on DVD in the U.S. this week. Bag Full of Money was filmed for TV and features Clark and McGuinn playing a variety of Byrds songs, as well as selections from their respective solo catalogs.

Among the Byrds hits that the two singers performed at the show were “Mr. Tambourine Man,” “Turn! Turn! Turn!,” “So You Want to Be a Rock ‘n’ Roll Star,” and “Eight Miles High.” The concert also included a rendition of Bob Dylan‘s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” and a version of McGuinn’s “Don’t You Write Her Off.” The latter tune went on to become a top 40 hit for McGuinn, Clark and Hillman, the trio formed by Gene, Roger and founding Byrds bassist Chris Hillman not long after the concert showcased in the Bag Full of Money DVD took place.

Clark initially shared lead vocal duties in The Byrds with McGuinn, and also was the band’s main songwriter until he exited the group in 1966. He went on to release a variety of critically well-received solo and collaborative albums, although he never again achieved the commercial success he enjoyed while in The Byrds. He died of alcohol-related health issues in 1991 at the age of 46.
