Neal Schon says he decided to tour with new group this year after Journey agreed to take most of 2019 off

Credit: Robert KnightGuitarist Neal Schon recently revealed that he’s put together a new group called Journey Through Time — featuring ex-Journey members Gregg Rolie and Deen Castronovo — that’ll be touring this year, playing some of Journey’s early material. This past week, Schon took to his blog to refute a recent report claiming he put Journey on hold for 2019 so he could focus on this new project.

“There is absolutely zero truth to the statements,” Neal writes. “I was told by [Journey manager John Baruck] that we all would take all of 2019 off except for possibly a few dates near the end of the year leading into 2020 and that [keyboardist] Jonathan Cain [and drummer] Steve Smith [had] other things they wanted to do.”

Schon adds, “At that point I decided to go out and have some fun with Gregg Rolie[,] Deen Castronovo[,] Marco Mendoza[,] Marti Frederiksen and Chris Collins and dip into our catalog — deep tracks (from the beginning and beyond) and that my friends is the way it REALLY went down instead of trying to blame me for us not playing next year.”

Fredericksen, who is a recent addition to the Journey Through Time lineup, has frequently collaborated with Aerosmith over the years and is a member of Steven Tyler‘s solo group, The Loving Mary Band.

Last month, Schon posted a video on his official YouTube channel featuring live audio snippets of Journey Through Time performing various songs, including Journey’s “Anyway You Want It,” “I’m Gonna Leave You,” “Stay Awhile” “Walks Like a Lady” and “Lights,” as well as “Black Magic Woman,” the early Fleetwood Mac song Rolie famously sang when he was the original lead vocalist of Santana.

Confirmed Journey Through Time tour dates are expected soon.
