Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagicIf you ever wanted to own the microphone Kurt Cobain used when he sang “Heart-Shaped Box,” now’s your chance. Recording engineer and producer Steve Albini is auctioning off three microphones used during the recording of Nirvana‘s final album, 1993’s In Utero.
The mics include two Lomo 19A9s, which were used as overheads for Dave Grohl‘s drum tracks, and an Electro-Voice PL20, which, along with one of the Lomos, was used to record Cobain’s vocals.
“They stopped being microphones and now they’re artifacts,” says Albini, who produced In Utero. “I feel like I should get them into the hands of somebody who would take care of them and not put them at risk in the hectic environment of a recording studio.”
Initially, Albini reached out to the surviving members of Nirvana — Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic — and offered the mics to them, but they declined and advised that he sell them.
The auction will run September 21 to September 30 via Reverb.com.
