Metallica’s Lars Ulrich lists his 15 favorite metal and hard rock albums

ABC/Randy HolmesMetallica‘s Lars Ulrich lists his 15 favorite heavy metal and hard-rock albums in a piece for Rolling Stone. The drummer’s picks include Deep Purple‘s 1972 live album Made in Japan, AC/DC‘s 1977 record Let There Be Rock and Guns N’ Roses‘ 1987 debut Appetite for Destruction.

Of Made in Japan, Ulrich writes, “Deep Purple obviously had a handful of insane songs, from ‘Highway Star’ to ‘Smoke on the Water’ to ‘Speed King’ to all the rest of them. But there’s probably no other band in rock where the difference between the album versions and the live versions are more radical.” Ulrich, of course, inducted Deep Purple into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year.

As for Let There Be Rock, Ulrich calls it AC/DC’s “heaviest…densest…most energetic record,” and he lauds Appetite for being “the blueprint for literally thousands of bands.”

Ulrich also picks a few more modern albums, including Rage Against the Machine‘s The Battle of Los Angeles and System of a Down‘s Toxicity.

Earlier this week, Rolling Stone shared its “100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time” list, which was topped by Black Sabbath‘s Paranoid. Ulrich’s band was well represented on the tally: Metallica’s Master of Puppets comes in at #2.

Here are Ulrich’s 15 favorite metal and hard rock albums, in alphabetical order:
