ABC/Randy HolmesWednesday, Metallica held their first Day of Service, a country-wide volunteering effort in coordination with the band’s All Within My Hands charity foundation. In addition to the many fans who participated by volunteering at their local food banks, the metal legends themselves donated $5,000 to the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank.

Drummer Lars Ulrich was on hand to present the check, and fans helped box over 37,000 pounds of oranges for those in need.

In a new video, frontman James Hetfield and guitarist Kirk Hammett thanked all the Metallica fans across the country who participated.

“A huge thank you to all the Metallica fans that participated in our very first Day of Service by volunteering at your community food bank,” Hetfield said.

“Thanks to you, over 1,800 ‘Tallica fans across the country have given their time to assist the hardworking folks who serve our communities each day,” Hammett added.
