Metallica congratulates Mariano Rivera for Hall of Fame induction; pitcher says he doesn’t “listen to that kind of music”

ABC/Randy HolmesOn Tuesday, New York Yankees pitching legend Mariano Rivera became the first player to be unanimously elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. If you ever saw Rivera in action, you know that Metallica‘s “Enter Sandman” would always play as he’d take the mound. So fittingly, the metal legends have offered their congratulations to the legendary closer.

In a video for MLB.com’s Cut4, frontman James Hetfield said, “We, Metallica, took a vote here, and it’s unanimous. Congratulations from the entire Metallica family, Mariano, on your induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame.”

“It’s well deserved, and we look forward to watching you enter the Hall this summer,” added drummer Lars Ulrich.

During an subsequent interview with the MLB Network, the interviewer played Metallica’s message for Rivera. While he called the shout-out “amazing” and the band members “great people,” he admitted that he’s actually not a huge fan of their music.

Responding to a question about how many Metallica shows he’s seen, Rivera laughed and said, “With all due respect to the guys, I’ve never been to one of them.”

“As a Christian — again, with all my respect to Metallica and all the guys — I don’t listen to that kind of music,” he added. “I listen to Christian music.”

Should Rivera ever want to know what all the fuss is about, he can catch Metallica on their current tour, which continues Thursday in Nashville.
