ABC/Richard CartwrightThe Who‘s Roger Daltrey may still be singing “I hope I die before I get old,” but thankfully, it’s way too late for that: He turns 75 today.

In 1959, Daltrey founded a band called The Detours, and in 1964, the group was rechristened The Who.  While guitarist Pete Townshend quickly emerged as The Who’s main songwriter and creative mastermind, Daltrey, with his powerful voice, blond locks and onstage swagger, became the perfect delivery system for Pete’s quirky yet dynamic tunes.

After belting out such early classics as “My Generation,” “I Can’t Explain” and “I Can See for Miles,” Daltrey went on to embody the lead character Townshend created for The Who’s landmark 1969 rock opera Tommy.

Among the many memorable Who tunes sung by Roger: “Baba O’Riley,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” “Behind Blues Eyes,” “Love Reign O’er Me,” “Who Are You” and “You Better You Bet.”

Daltrey also launched a solo career that’s included notable songs like “Free Me,” “Without Your Love” and “After the Fire.” His most recent solo effort, As Long as I Have You, was released in June of 2018.

Roger has made his mark on Hollywood as well: He starred in the movie adaption of Tommy, as well as films like Lisztomania and McVicar.

Daltrey’s also known for his charitable work, best exemplified by his patronage of the U.K.’s Teenage Cancer Trust and its U.S. counterpart, Teen Cancer America.  The charities help fund teen-friendly recreational centers at various medical treatment facilities.

The Who is currently working on what would be its first studio album since 2006’s Endless Wire. In May, the group embarks on its Moving On! tour, which will feature the band performing with an orchestra at each stop.
