Due May 19, Soulfire was recorded with a new version of Little Steven’s longstanding band, the Disciples of Soul. You can listen to the title track on Vevo.

Van Zandt describes the album as “me doing me,” explaining, “There are a couple of covers, a couple of new songs, and some of what I feel are the best songs I’ve written and co-written over the years.”

The new songs include “I Saw the Light,” originally intended for ex-Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora, and “The City Weeps Tonight,” which dates all the way back to the writing sessions for Van Zandt’s first solo album in the early ‘80s.

Soulfire also features new versions of “I Don’t Wanna Go Home,” a hit for Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, and “Love on the Wrong Side of Town,” co-written by Little Steven’s E Street Band boss Bruce Springsteen.

The new album came about after a Disciples of Soul reunion last October in London. Little Steven recalls, “I thought, well, we’ve already learned 22 songs. Maybe we should make an album.”

He also calls it “the most fun I’ve ever had making a record,” adding, “We did it quickly, while we still had the fire and energy from the London show. We just took it into the studio and banged it out, six weeks from start to mix.”

Now he’s taking the Disciples of Soul on the road, with a full North American itinerary expected soon. Van Zandt vows to “take this band to every place that wants to see us. It’s tricky with a 15-piece band, but I’m just trying to achieve my lifelong goal of breaking even!”
