Universal Music GroupU.K. newspaper The Guardian is giving Beatles fans an exclusive preview of one of the unreleased studio outtakes that will be included in the upcoming expanded 50th anniversary reissue of the group’s landmark 1967 album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
The track is an in-progress version of the album’s title song, that’s missing elements including the lead guitar heard during the intro, the prominent horn sections, and the cheering crowd noises.
The outtake, which is subtitled “Take 9 and Speech,” also is missing the sung “Billy Shears” transition into “With a Little Help from My Friends,” and instead has a long fade-out section featuring various band members whistling and yelling out phrases such as “I feel it” and “Gotta be free now.”
The very end of the track features studio chatter, during which you can hear Paul McCartney comment, “I think it’ll probably be another day singing it,” and George Harrison making a suggestion about how to approach singing part of the tune.

The 50th anniversary edition of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band will be released May 26 in various configurations and formats, including a Super Deluxe box set featuring a newly remastered version of the album, a mono mix of the record, 34 previously unreleased recordings from the sessions, a making-of documentary and much more.
