Credit: Michie TurpinThe tour that kicked off last fall celebrating the 40th anniversary of Kansas‘ breakthrough 1976 album, Leftoverture, is now set to carry on all the way into December. The veteran rockers, who’ll launch a spring leg of the trek on Friday, have added a lengthy new series of concerts running from an August 25 performance in Shreveport, Louisiana, through a December 9 show in The Villages, Florida.
Tickets for most of the new dates go on sale on Friday, March 31. The shows feature a full performance of Leftoverture, as well as select other songs from throughout Kansas’ long career, including tunes from the group’s latest studio effort, 2016’s The Prelude Implicit.
Speaking about the tour’s success, founding Kansas drummer Phil Ehart tells Billboard, “Way beyond our expectations is an understatement…Last fall I said, ‘If we could get 10 or 12 dates of this, that would be great,’ and we just blew by that. I guess we’d kind of forgotten what a huge album that was and is, and people really want to come out and hear us do it in its entirety.”
Leftoverture peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200, and includes arguably Kansas’ most enduring hit, “Carry On Wayward Son.” The album has sold more than five million copies in the U.S. to date.
Meanwhile, Ehart tells Billboard that Kansas also has big plans for 2018, including recording and releasing another studio album, and launching a tour focusing on Leftoverture‘s multi-platinum follow-up, 1977’s Point of Know Return.
“We’ll have the new album and do some songs off that and then play Point of Know Return in its entirety, so we’re going to use the same formula,” Ehart says of the group’s proposed next tour.
