Grant Hart, drummer, co-vocalist and songwriter of the influential punk and alternative rock band Husker Du, has died.  Hart’s Husker Du band mate, singer and guitarist Bob Mould, confirms Hart’s passing on his Facebook.

After reminiscing about first meeting Hart and their relationship over the ensuing decades, Mould writes in part, “The tragic news of Grant’s passing was not unexpected to me. My deepest condolences and thoughts to Grant’s family, friends, and fans around the world.  Grant Hart was a gifted visual artist, a wonderful story teller, and a frighteningly talented musician. Everyone touched by his spirit will always remember.”

Mould concludes: “Godspeed, Grant. I miss you. Be with the angels.”

Hart, an inspiration to fellow musicians like Foo Fighters‘ frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, was 56, and was said to have been suffering from cancer.

Husker Du’s Facebook Facebook posted a black-and-white photo of Grant early Thursday morning, with no commentary, followed by fans posting their sympathies.

Formed in Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1979, Husker Du released six albums between 1983 and 1987 before disbanding in 1988.  Hart then briefly formed the band Nova Mob before going solo.

Back in July, a gaunt-looking Hart was honored in his hometown of Minneapolis at a surprise tribute to him that featured musicians like his former bandmate Greg Norton, and Soul Asylum’s Dave Pirner, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.
