Experience Hendrix L.L.C./Legacy Recordings/AbramoramaThe 2015 concert film and documentary Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church, which features footage from The Jimi Hendrix Experience‘s July 4, 1970, performance at the second Atlanta International Pop Festival, will be shown in various U.S. theaters over the next few months, Billboard reports.

The first screenings of the movie, which originally aired on Showtime in 2015 and was released on DVD and Blu-ray the same year, will take place on January 31 in Los Angeles and New York City.

The L.A. event, to be held at the ArcLight Hollywood, will feature a post-screening Q&A with the film’s director, John McDermott, longtime Hendrix engineer Eddie Kramer and Jimi’s sister Janie Hendrix, who’s the CEO of the Experience Hendrix company.

Janie will take part in a post-screening discussion on February 13 at the SIFF Cinema Uptown in Seattle, while one-time Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys bassist Billie Cox will be on hand for a Q&A at a February 13 screening of Electric Church at the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville.

Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church focuses on Atlanta promoter Alex Cooley‘s efforts to organize the festival, as well as Hendrix and his band’s role as the event’s headliner.  The festival, which took place just 10 weeks before the guitar legend’s death, was Hendrix’s largest U.S. headlining performance ever, with an audience estimated at over 300,000.

The documentary also includes rare footage, plus interviews with Cox, late Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell, Paul McCartney, Steve Winwood, The Black CrowesRich Robinson, Metallica‘s Kirk Hammett and others.

“The excitement of seeing this vibrant, unusually talented guy do these things, that’s what connects and inspires people,” says McDermott. “That’s what’s behind the strategy of trying to do [these screenings].”
