Elton John on Making Albums: “It’s Someone Else’s Turn Now”

ABC/Randy HolmesBack in February, Elton John came out with a well-reviewed album called Wonderful Crazy Night.  But based on interview that aired this week, it may very well end up being his final album.

Speaking to the British TV show Good Morning Britain, Elton said, “I’m gonna be 70 next year but I think I’m singing better than I’ve ever done.  I have a wonderful band and I love playing.”

Then, he switched gears. “You know, records are a crapshoot,” he said. “My records don’t sell anymore because, y’know, people have enough Elton John records in their collection.  I love making ’em, but it’s someone else’s turn now.”

Of course, this doesn’t mean that Elton is going to retire — he enjoys touring as much as ever — but it doesn’t seem like he feels making records is worth the effort.  On the other hand, Elton said that he enjoys the albums being made by young, up-and-coming artists, some of whom he got to join him on stage during his appearance at this past weekend’s Apple Music Festival.

“When I hear new music — and there is a lot of it around — it keeps me young and on my toes,” he told Good Morning Britain. “I know all the great music — it’s all in my head — but when you hear something new and that is so great, it really does inspire me.”

By the way, Elton says that he’ll be in L.A. on his 70th birthday, March 25, 2017.  He told Good Morning Britain, “I’d like to do something for charity on the night.”
