The center is an environmentally sustainable facility that will host informative exhibits for the half-million people who visit Walden Pond annually.

Henley is the founder of the Walden Woods Project, a conservation group that helps protect and preserve the land surrounding Walden Pond. At the ceremony, a new partnership between the project and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation was announced that will support the stewardship of Walden Pond.

Henley said in a statement that the collaboration also will “keep Thoreau’s legacy alive for future generations.” He explained that visitors to the new center will get to interact with interpretive exhibits; will be introduced to Thoreau’s philosophy, which invites people “to consider what constitutes good citizenship and leading a purposeful life”; and will be offered “avenues to reflect on some of the most compelling issues of our time.”

Joining Henley at the ceremony were a number of Massachusetts officials, including State Senator Michael Barrett, State Representative Cory Atkins, and Leo P. Roy, commissioner of the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

In other news, Henley recently commented in an interview with the Montreal Gazette that he might one day consider an Eagles reunion if Glenn Frey‘s son, Deacon, would be agreeable to filling in for his late dad.

“Glenn has a son who can sing and play quite well. And one of the only things that would make sense to me is if it were his son,” Henley told the newspaper. “But there have been no discussions along those lines, and we’re still going through the healing process.”
