David Crosby Unveils Details of Upcoming Solo Album, “Lighthouse”

1042

GroundUP Music/Verve Label GroupDavid Crosby recently announced that he was making two solo albums, and now he’s revealed all the official details about one of them.

Lighthouse, a nine-song collection on which he collaborated with Michael League of the Grammy-winning modern-jazz collective Snarky Puppy, will arrive on October 21.

The album features sparsely arranged tunes that showcase the folk-rock legend’s vocals and guitars. League produced the record and teamed up with Crosby to co-write about half of the tunes. One track, “Paint You a Picture,” was was penned with “Walking in Memphis” singer/songwriter Marc Cohn.

The disc features a number of politically-themed songs that focus on such topics as war-mongering politicians and the Syrian refugee crisis, but Lighthouse‘s lead track, “Things We Do for Love,” is a delicate, wistful song that David wrote about his wife of almost 40 years, Jan. You can check out the song now on YouTube.

Crosby, who turns 75 next month, says of Lighthouse, “To create brand new music that I’m excited about is a pearl beyond price.”

Regarding his unorthodox approach to songwriting, David explains, “I put a guitar in a strange tuning and I see what I find. It gives you different inversions of the chords and it gives you different sounds. [The tunings help] me find things that are fresh and that are mine rather than just repeating stuff that other people have done.”

The album was recorded in just 12 days at Groove Masters, a studio in Santa Monica, California, that’s owned by Crosby’s old friend Jackson Browne.

Prior to the album’s release, Crosby will mount a late-summer North American solo tour running from an August 18 concert in South Orange, New Jersey, through a September 15 show in Vancouver, Canada.  Accompanying him will be his son, keyboardist James Raymond.
