“David Bowie Is” mobile app released today; preview available online

David Bowie Archive/Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc.The digital version of the popular David Bowie Is museum exhibition was released Tuesday as an augmented reality (AR) app for mobile devices, coinciding with what would have been David Bowie‘s 72nd birthday.

The app, which features narration by Oscar-winning actor Gary Oldman, is available for Apple and Android platforms and is priced at $7.99. You can check out a video preview of, and images from, the David Bowie Is AR mobile app at DavidBowieIsReal.com.

Among the items and features included in the app are 56 costumes, 38 songs, 23 music videos and live performances, 60 original lyric sheets and design notes, 50 photos, 33 drawings and sketches, and seven paintings.

Highlights of the app include footage from Bowie’s 1972 performance at London’s Rainbow Theatre, his 1990 Sound & Vision Tour, his 1974 Diamond Dogs Tour and the experimental Diamond Dogs movie; a 1989 photo shoot by Herb Ritts; David’s script for the stage production Lazarus; his sketchbook for the “Blackstar” video; and his original lyrics for the song.

As previously reported, the David Bowie Is exhibition opened at London’s V&A museum in March 2013 and was shown at 11 other venues around the world before closing in July 2018 at New York City’s Brooklyn Museum of Art.

A virtual-reality (VR) version of the mobile app will be released at a later date.
