Classic Albums by Neil Young and Rush Honored with Canada’s Polaris Heritage Prize

Reprise; MercuryNeil Young and Rush are among the 2016 winners of the Polaris Heritage Prize, which honors albums by Canadian artists released prior to 2006 based on artistic merit. Among the albums recognized this year are Young’s 1970 record After the Gold Rush and Rush’s 1981 release Moving Pictures.

The awards are an offshoot of the annual Polaris Music Prize, which has recognized an outstanding Canadian album each year since 2006. Polaris Heritage Prizes are presented annually to two albums nominated in each of four time periods: 1960-1975, 1976-1985, 1986-1995 and 1996-2005. One album in each period is chosen by fan vote and the other is picked by a jury music critics.

After the Gold Rush won the popular vote for the 1960-1975 time period, while Moving Pictures took home the fan-voted prize for the 1976-1985 era.

Among the other 2016 Polaris Heritage Prize winners is acclaimed singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen‘s 1967 debut, Songs of Leonard Cohen, which was honored with the jury-voted award for 1960-1975.
