Credit: Doug HeslipBlackfoot, the veteran Southern rock band founded in 1970 by longtime Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Rickey Medlocke, will release a new studio album titled Southern Native on August 5. Medlocke, who left Blackfoot in 1997 when he joined Skynyrd, has contributed songs and guitar to his old band’s latest studio effort, which he also produced.

The current Blackfoot lineup, which Medlocke helped put together, features including lead guitarist/singer Tim Rossi, guitarist/singer Rick Krasowski, bassist Brian Carpenter and drummer Matt Anastasi.

“This record is head to head old school meets new school, classic to new rock for a brand new generation!” says Medlocke of Southern Native. “Turn it up loud!”

Adds Rossi, “Rickey bridged the generations by having his grandfather Shorty Medlocke play on those early Blackfoot records, so having Rickey play slide and other guitar with us on this record bridges the modern gap. It’s a full-circle kind of thing.”

The album includes an updated cover of the classic Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young protest song “Ohio.”

Blackfoot has a variety of U.S. tour dates lined up, spanning from a show Wednesday in Westland, Michigan, through a September 24 concert in Kent Narrows, North Dakota.
