Billy Corgan Is “Back in Contact” with Original Smashing Pumpkins Bassist D’arcy Wretzky

Credit: Scarlet PageLast month, Billy Corgan announced that “there’s some big stuff happening” with The Smashing Pumpkins. Since Corgan toured with original Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin and reunited with original guitarist James Iha earlier this year, many took “big stuff” to mean a possible reunion of the band’s entire original lineup: Corgan, Chamberlin, Iha and reclusive bassist D’arcy Wretzky.

In a new Facebook video, Corgan has clarified that there are no concrete reunion plans at the moment, although he reveals that he is “back in contact” with the original Pumpkins, including Wretzky.

“I’ve been in communication with D’arcy for the first time in about 16,17 years,” Corgan says. “It’s awesome to have my friend back. So we’re all in communication, which as I said not too long ago, my primary interest in the old band was us having good relationships again.”

He adds, “We’re not at that point [of reuniting], and I think that’s a good thing. We’re not rushing to something. We have to, of course, repair some things between us, and, at the same point, see what’s out there for us, if those opportunities are even there.”

While Corgan reiterates that there is no Pumpkins reunion at the moment, he certainly leaves the door open for one in the future, provided that all relationships between the band members are solid.

“There’s excitement there that surrounds the idea [that] maybe there’s the possibility that we will get back together,” Corgan says. “But until you hear it come from my mouth that the band is getting back together and we’re playing dates, my primary concern is the family relationships of the band that are ultimately so much more important.”
