Morgan Fisher, Ian Hunter, Ariel Bender (Tia Haygood; Ross Halfin; Trudi Knight)Founding Mott the Hoople frontman Ian Hunter has revived his old band for its first tour of the U.S. in 45 years. The eight-date trek that will run from an April 1 show in Milwaukee through an April 10 concert in New York City.
The group, which will use the moniker Mott the Hoople ’74, will feature the singer accompanied by two members of the band’s 1974 lineup — guitarist Ariel Bender and keyboardist Morgan Fisher — augmented by musicians who play in Hunter’s longtime solo outfit The Rant Band: ex-Wings drummer Steve Holley and guitarist James Mastro of the veteran indie-rock act The Bongos.
The Mott the Hoople ’74 lineup previously played several concerts in Europe last summer, and will follow its 2019 U.S. tour with six U.K. shows later in April. Mott the Hoople is best-known for its classic 1972 hit “All the Young Dudes,” penned by David Bowie. Hunter was a member of the group from 1969 to 1974, and then launched a successful solo career. Another original member was guitarist Mick Ralphs, who left the band in 1973 to form Bad Company.
Previous Mott the Hoople reunions were held in 2009 and 2013 that featured all of the founding members: Hunter, Ralphs, drummer Dale “Buffin” Griffin, bassist Peter Overend Watts and keyboardist Verden Allen.
Unfortunately, Griffin and Watts died in 2016 and 2017, respectively, while Ralphs has been sidelined with health issues.
