Roy’s Boys/Legacy RecordingsBlack & White Night 30, the newly updated and expanded version of the late Roy Orbison‘s historic, star-studded 1988 concert special Black & White Night, gets its release Friday, February 24. The new collection, which will be available as a DVD/CD and Blu-ray/CD set, feature previously unreleased performances, unseen camera angles and a documentary about the show that includes interviews with the event’s various guest artists.
The new collection boasts a re-imagined, re-edited, remastered version of the concert, which took place in Los Angeles in September 1987 and originally aired as a cable-TV special. Orbison sang a variety of his memorable songs at the show with accompaniment from Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, T Bone Burnett, Bonnie Raitt, k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes and J.D. Souther. The evening’s house band was Elvis Presley‘s famed TCB Band, which included guitar great James Burton, keyboardist Glen D. Hardin, bassist Jerry Scheff and drummer Ronnie Tutt.
The Black & White Night 30 show also features an unreleased alternate performance of Roy’s classic song “Oh, Pretty Woman” and more.
In celebration of the release, a video featuring the first 23 minutes of the re-edited concert has been posted on Orbison’s official Facebook page. Roy’s son Alex appears at the beginning of the clip to introduce the footage.
As Alex explains, “The whole idea of Black & White Night 30 is a front-row center ticket to have you seeing a Roy Orbison show that is the Black & White Night.”
The DVD and Blu-ray discs also include five previously unreleased bonus performances that took place after the audience had left the venue, as well as a 33-minute documentary featuring rehearsal footage and interviews filmed before and after the concert with Springsteen, Costello, Browne, Raitt and others.
